The Importance of Character Builds

Character builds in Path of Exile 2 are critical as they determine how a player interacts with the game world, combats enemies, and overcomes challenges. A well-designed build enhances survivability, maximizes damage output, and ensures a smooth progression through the game's content. The depth of customization available encourages experimentation and rewards strategic planning, making it one of the most captivating aspects of the game.​

 

Available Build Archetypes

Path of Exile 2 offers a variety of build archetypes, each catering to different playstyles:​

  • Melee: Engages enemies in close combat using weapons like Quarterstaves, Maces, Swords, Axes, Spears, Claws, Flails, Sceptres, Daggers or even when unarmed, focusing on high Damage output and durability.​

  • Caster: Utilizes Spells to inflict elemental or chaos damage (rarely Physical, at least in PoE2) from a distance, often relying on Mana and Energy Shield mechanics.​

  • Ranged: Employs projectile attacks from afar, emphasizing high damage output, amazing clear speed, and usually critical strikes.​ Most commonly you will see those types of characters wielding Bows and Crossbows, but it's also possible with Wands (currently the available abilities are severely underperforming though) and some Melee weapons can offer quasi-ranged playstyle.

  • Trigger: Activates skills automatically in response to specific conditions, enabling complex and reactive combat strategies.​ There is a number of Meta Gems that define such builds which include Cast on Crit, Cast on Freeze, Cast on Shock, Cast on Ignite, Cast on Dodge, and Cast on Minion Death. You can also make a build that will fit this category based on Thorns, Blocks, or some other exclusive modifiers found on Unique Items.

  • Minion: Summons creatures to fight on the player's behalf, focusing on minion strength and survivability.​ Unlike Path of Exile 1, the number of Minions you can summon doesn't depend on the Passives and Gems you use, but the new resource called Spirit. This moves the potential ceiling of this archetype much higher, as you can summon more and more Minions the more you invest into your setup.

  • Totem: Places stationary constructs that cast spells or attack enemies, allowing for strategic area control.​ This build archetype has unusual damage scaling in Path of Exile 2 and is too popular currently

  • Trap and MInes: Deploys devices that trigger upon enemy contact (Traps) or when detonated by the player (Mines), dealing burst damage or applying crowd control effects.​

  • Support: a group of builds that maximize the effectiveness of Auras, Curses, or possibly other debuffs, increasing the performance of the entire party, while not doing any damage. These are not yet fully implemented in PoE2 but they are expected to be an important part of the game when it's finally released.
